KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - East Tennesseans, along with several veterans, went to the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial Monday to honor thousands of fallen heroes. “This is hallowed ground. This is a very special place.” American Legion Post 2 Commander Michael Testerman said, “If you get to the point where your name is no longer spoken, then you are forgotten, but that’s not going to happen on our watch.”

Dozens gather for annual 'Reading of the Names' in downtown Knoxville on Memorial Day
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Thousands of names written in the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial were called at sunrise in downtown Knoxville on Monday. At sunrise every Memorial Day, the names of more than 6,300 are read as part of the Reading of the Names ceremony. Volunteer readers read off the names engraved on the granite columns of the memorial, which honor people who died during military service. The memorial was dedicated and officially unveiled Nov. 15, 2008.
