The Metropolitan Transportation Authority saw a record-breaking surge of riders over Halloween and New York City Marathon weekend — but many fed-up straphangers complained of dangerously crowded platforms and lengthy delays. Some 3.14 million riders took the subway Sunday, marking an all-time ridership high for the first day of the week and shattering last year’s record by 11%, Governor Kathy Hochul and the MTA announced Monday. Similarly, the day before, on Halloween, straphangers smashed the previous post-pandemic Saturday record with 3.59 million riders, marking the most on a single Saturday since 2016. Roughly 3.59 million straphangers rode the subway on Halloween Saturday. Zuma / SplashNews.com Even before the Big Apple’s mammoth weekend, the subway carried a whopping 4.72 million passengers on a record-shattering Thursday, marking the highest single-day ridership since the pandemic with a 9.7% increase in ridership compared to the same day last year. “From the streets to the subways, New Yorkers were on the move this weekend in record numbers,” Hochul said in a press release. MTA bus-fare retreat could doom all NYC public transit “The subway is the lifeblood of our city and from Halloween to the marathon, the major events that make New York special simply
Congestion pricing is a huge failure if you look at its stated goals, but a brilliant ploy to rob the public by appealing to the war on cars. Despite the mutual back-patting from Gov. Kathy Hochul and her MTA minions, traffic is no faster and the air is no cleaner since the city started tolling cars and trucks in much of Manhattan. It has raised money, yielding the MTA about $750 million this year, almost covering the lost revenue from bus and subway fare evasion. So if picking the pockets of working people is a win, then it’s going gangbusters. Dem pol blames congestion pricing for breakup after beau couldn’t afford toll — as she rips Hochul-backed tax But the warm-and-fuzzy crowd feels like the tolls are a win for the environment and so on, and feelings are what matter, right? Hence, too, the push to redesign the city to make driving a car as expensive and inconvenient as possible. Hochul just confessed: She’ll give Mamdani his tax hikes next year Bicycles account for about 1% of all commuting, but romantics feel they’ll become New Yorkers’ most popular option if we’re relentless enough in expanding mostly-empty bike lanes — and
The largest signal and track replacement project in MTA history will modernize equipment that dates back to the 1930s. New York transit officials have launched a $1.9 billion project to replace nearly century-old subway signals and aging tracks in Brooklyn and Queens, using revenue from Manhattan’s controversial congestion pricing program to help finance the largest overhaul of its kind in Metropolitan Transportation Authority history.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) achieved several significant milestones following a surge in railroad ridership, with the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) surpassing pre-pandemic levels for the second time this year, and Metro-North Railroad setting new weekend ridership records, driven by fall travel, including foliage trains serving the Hudson Valley. Ridership on both railroads is at or near historic highs for both weekday and weekend travel, with LIRR monthly ridership in September now exceeding pre-pandemic 2019 levels.
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A former FDNY commissioner from Staten Island is calling on state leaders to prevent autonomous vehicles from operating in New York, citing a series of incidents across the country where driverless cars have interfered with emergency responders. Long Island Rail Road use exceeded its September 2019 level, while Metro-North set a new weekend record during the fall travel season. The gains show how commuter rail is changing as leisure trips grow, even as the MTA faces rising long-term costs. MTA commuter rail ridership reached several post-pandemic milestones...

Monday marked the first morning commute on the redesigned Van Wyck Expressway after New York completed a $1.4 billion reconstruction project. The project revamped a 4.3-mile stretch of the expressway, adding new lanes for certain vehicles in an effort to improve traffic flow, including for drivers traveling to and from John F. Kennedy International Airport.
As many in the community are aware, I have been defending motorists in traffic courts all around New York since 1992. I have seen a consistent decline in the alleged impartiality of the system. In my opinion, the start of the decline was in 2019, when the Department of Motor Vehicles merged with the NYC Traffic Violations Bureau. Until then, there was at least an illusion that motorists disputed their moving violations in a judicial/legal setting. This is absolutely not the case anymore.
For many Long Islanders, freight trains are easy to miss. Operating largely during midday and late-night hours on the same tracks used by the Long Island Rail Road, they quietly haul heavy loads that help keep stores, businesses and supply chains moving. That largely unseen network is about to get...
