KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Kennewick Police said one man was arrested after hours long SWAT standoff.
Edwardo Medrano, 79, was arrested and booked for unlawful possession of a firearm, possessing a stolen firearm, malicious mischief, resisting arrest and obstructing a law enforcement officer.
The call for help came in just before 4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 28 when Kennewick Police officers responded to the Tradewinds apartments for a welfare check by a different resident. Medrano also called in and requested medical attention for a sick man.
Officials said officers began providing aid to the man after arriving on scene but Medrano's behavior was only escalating.
According to police, Medrano was upset and arguing with officers while the man was receiving medical attention nearby. Officers said they saw a 10-gauge shotgun near Medrano and decided to exit the building to avoid escalating the situation more.
Officials said when officers left the apartment, Medrano went into his bedroom and closed the door. At this time, police did not know the severity of the other man's condition and went back into the apartment where medical personnel were able to assist him.
Police then investigated further into Medrano and discovered he was previously convicted of murder in Arizona and also felonious assault in Washington. These past conviction make it so Medrano is not legally allowed to possess firearms.
According to officials, officer were granted a search warrant for Medrano's arrest and the Tri-Cities Regional SWAT team was dispatched.
During the standoff, police said Medrano pointed the shotgun at a SWAT drone that entered the apartment. Soon after, police reported Medrano had used a tool to hit and damage the drone.
After some negotiation with officers, Medrano agreed to place the shotgun outside of the bedroom where police could grab it. After inspecting the gun, police said it had been stolen.
Police said a little more negotiation led to Medrano surrendering and was arrested.
According to KPD, officers were able to search the apartment unit and found a second firearm and a significant amount of bullets or shells.
