Flood advisory issued for north, windward Kaua’i
A flood advisory is in effect until 4:15 p.m. today for portions of Kauaʻi. Just after 1 p.m., National Weather Service radar indicated heavy rain over north and windward Kauaʻi. The heaviest rain was over Kapahi, falling at just more than 2 inches per hour. These showers are slowly moving north, and additional showers are expected through the afternoon.
Drug overdose deaths up in Maui County, Kauai as fentanyl use grows
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii saw another rise in fatal overdoses last year — fueled by the increase use of fentanyl. Preliminary data from the state’s High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas program show an alarming jump in deaths in Maui County in 2023. Gary Yabuta, of Hawaii HIDTA, said the figures on Maui were steady throughout the year and did not spike after the August wildfires.
Update: Flood advisory for Kaua‘i canceled
Update at 2:58 p.m. May 10: The National Weather Service says radar shows that the heavy rainfall that started at about 1 p.m. today has diminished and the flood advisory that was in effect for Kaua‘i has been canceled. However, a flood watch remains in effect until 6 a.m....
Portion of Wawae Road in Kalāheo closed until further notice
The County of Kaua‘i Department of Public Works announces that a portion of Wawae Road, between Kuli Road and Iwilei Road in Kalāheo, has been closed until further notice. “After frequent inspections of the affected roadway, this area of Wawae Road has been closed immediately and until further until it is deemed safe,” said County Engineer Troy Tanigawa. “Following recent rains and the flooding event in April, the portion beneath Wawae Road continues to erode, compromising the roadway’s stability.”
Kaua'i Humane Society offers free off-Island dog adoptions
LIHUE, Hawaii (Island News) -- Thanks to a generous sponsorship, the Kaua'i Humane Society (KHS) announced free off-island dog adoptions, available from now through May 11. This will allow people to welcome their Kaua'i dogs to the mainland without financial burden, fostering bonds and spreading joy, “one paw at a time.”
