How many concert tickets did Morton Amphitheater sell in its first season?

The inaugural season of Riverside’s new concert venue just wrapped up and in the eyes of Live Nation, it was a huge success. Andrew Newport, regional vice president of Venue Operations at Live Nation, and Dave Gerardi, market president of Missouri at Live Nation, met with The Star to discuss the first year of Morton Amphitheater , the 16,000-capacity concert venue that opened in June. Newport and Gerardi said that with the 43 concerts, the Riverside venue — with artists ranging from Kesha , Pitbull and Guns ‘N Roses to Dave Matthews Band , Bryson Tiller and Chris Stapleton they sold over 400,000 tickets . Many of these shows sold out according to their data, and it’s helping shape what concertgoers can expect in 2027. Gerardi said that Kansas City has historically been a great market for country music, with Stapleton and Brooks & Dunn selling out and high attendance for Tyler Childers, Tim McGraw, Thomas Rhett and Luke Bryan. The guy who took over the former Sun Fresh in the Linwood Shopping Center to save a grocery store for East Side Kansas City residents in the Prospect corridor might have a knack for turning around urban markets. We’ll see, because that guy, Anthony Estrada , just took on a new challenge: managing another grocery store in what used to be The Merc Co+op, a community-owned market in Kansas City, Kansas. It’s a project Estrada said he’s been working toward for more than a year. And now it looks like he may be only two or three months away from opening what will be his second urban grocery store. It will be a United Market, just like the store he opened in May at 31st Street and Prospect Avenue in Kansas City. Maybe it’s because his mom’s meatloaf was waiting for him when he returned from studying abroad in Paris or attending college in Parkville. It’s also just as nice of a feeling when his wife returns home from working as a nurse at the University of Kansas Medical Center. What if that feeling of coming home could be evoked in a restaurant? That’s Roth’s goal with Marigolds, a new breakfast and lunch restaurant that opened Tuesday in a former Panera Bread, and located across the street from the major hospital campus. “We wanted a place where you could have a nice, warm meal and just relax,” Roth said. The Marigolds owner plays up that juxtaposition against what the space used to be and the medical campus directly across the street. The corporate cafe chain there before, as well as the hospital, are standardized, minimalist and sterile. Beloved mural on Southwest Boulevard honoring KC Mexican community gets new look

In 1991, a handful of young Kansas City artists painted a mural on the long, brick wall of a self-storage company on busy Southwest Boulevard. Their artwork paid homage to the history, culture and pride of the Mexican-American community of Kansas City’s Westside. The public art project made news. It was led by a 23-year-old Kansas City Art Institute student who grew up in the neighborhood, the same woman who now, 35 years later, is spearheading the transformation of the wall — all 683 feet of it. For Jenny Mendez and a new group of artists, the Celebration of Youth Mural Project is about more than just putting paint on a wall. “I just hope that families and the community see it as something positive and see it as something that, even though they might have been attached to what was there before, ... as in everything it’s OK if it’s reborn, we redo it, we replenish it to make sure we tell a new story,” said Mendez. “I think as artists that’s probably the biggest part of it. If you’ve seen me around town, you’ll probably recognize one physical feature, even from far away: my afro, usually sporting some flowers. I frequently comb my hair outside and flick the leftovers into the wind. Not gonna lie, this started because I was being lazy and didn’t want to find a trash can. But it got me thinking about what happens to those strands once they blow away. Natural fibers don’t just disappear. Some become useful resources for organisms in the landscape. At my house, we have a bluebird box. However, the first season after we installed it, there wasn’t a bluebird in sight. Instead, a black-capped chickadee had set up shop, constructing her nest out of moss and dead grass. Right in the center was a clump of my curly black hair. There were also fibers from various outdoor furniture sources. If you enjoy birdwatching, you may have seen tufted titmice, orioles, and other small birds collecting materials for their nests.
