Union Says Big Island Wastewater Plants Are Dangerously Understaffed
A union representing Big Island wastewater treatment plant employees say their working conditions are unsafe due to deteriorated equipment and low staffing levels. The aging plants in Hilo, Papaikou and Kulaimano are included in an administrative consent order recently signed between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Hawaii County that aims to bring the facilities into compliance with federal environmental law.
Kona man sentenced to 20 years in prison for crime spree a year ago
A Kona man was sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to a myriad of offenses that occurred during a crime spree in April 2023. Dylan Alcain, 28, was sentenced on May 3. On April 20, 2023, Alcain, along with his wife Leilani, broke into two Hele-On gas stations — one in Kona and the other in Captain Cook; committed an armed robbery in the Kona Paradise Subdivision in South Kona; and fired at police officers who were attempting to pull them over.
