From toddlers to teens, about 10 keiki and their parents walked through Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport Thursday afternoon to catch their Southwest flight to Kona. Those families boarding Flight 143 were members of the Facebook group Autism Moms of Kona. And this mock travel day was meant as a fun activity to help children with autism get more comfortable with the process of going through the airport — starting from the ticket counter, to going through security, and agriculture to boarding a plane and ending at baggage claim.

Hilo high debate team represents Hawaiʻi Island at top state tournament
Four students from Hilo High School represented Hawai’i Island at the 2024 Hawaii State Debate Tournament on Oʻahu this month. The tournament, which was hosted by Kamehameha Schools- Kapalama on April 6th and 7th, was open to high school students who qualified by winning a series of debate rounds at a local district tournament. The Vikings were the only public school representing a neighbor island.

Hilo man sentenced after pleading guilty to drug charge
A Hilo man was sentenced to a 10-year prison term in Hilo Circuit Court Thursday after pleading guilty to possession of 19 grams of methamphetamine. On Nov. 9, 2023, Duke Kaleolani Malakaua, 51, pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted promotion of a dangerous drug, a class B felony, and first-degree unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, a class C felony.
