New Missouri shooting range permit rule starts in March 2027

Missouri will begin requiring permits in March 2027 for people using more than 35 unstaffed state firearms shooting ranges, a change intended to address increasing damage, litter and safety concerns. The Missouri Conservation Commission gave final approval Oct. 23 to Missouri Department of Conservation regulations requiring users to have a valid small game hunting permit, according to a community announcement. Existing age and disability exemptions will remain. The requirement applies only to MDC-owned unstaffed firearms shooting ranges. It will not apply to partner ranges or MDC's five staffed ranges. Why MDC is requiring permits MDC offers free recreational firearms shooting at more than 35 unstaffed ranges across Missouri. The ranges were designed decades ago primarily for hunters, with much of their traditional use occurring in the spring and fall as hunters prepared for hunting seasons. Range use has increased significantly in recent years as more people practice with firearms for home and self-defense and use modern sporting rifles, according to the announcement. MDC also reported increasing damage to signs, shooting booths and other infrastructure. Some users have left spent shells, targets and other litter rather than collecting and properly disposing of the items. The agency said in the announcement that

Young Missouri hunters harvested 11,878 deer last weekend

Young hunters harvested 11,878 deer during Missouri’s early youth portion of firearms deer season Oct. 24-25. Preliminary Missouri Department of Conservation data, according to a community announcement, showed Howell County led the state with 303 deer harvested, followed by Franklin County with 276 and Texas County with 226. The statewide harvest included 7,234 antlered bucks, 3,721 does and 923 button bucks. Youth hunters ages 6 through 15 participated in the early youth portion. Recent early youth portions have averaged about 14,600 deer harvested. MDC attributed the lower total this season to above-average temperatures. “Unfortunately, the abnormally warm fall we’ve been experiencing so far continued through last weekend,” MDC Cervid Program Supervisor Jason Isabelle said in the announcement. “Although not as warm as the early antlerless portion, highs in the 80s during the early youth portion undoubtedly suppressed daytime deer movement.” Isabelle said cooler temperatures are forecast for early November, when Missouri’s archery deer hunting reaches its peak period. Missouri deer hunting season dates Archery deer season opened Sept. 15 and runs through Nov. 13 before reopening Nov. 25 and continuing through Jan. 15, 2027.
