HONOLULU (KHON2) — A 53-year-old man is dead following an incident involving a Maui Police Department officer and taser.

On Wednesday, April 10, 2024, the Maui Police Department received a report of a stolen Ford F-150 pickup truck from the Kahului area.

The next day, police said the stolen vehicle was reportedly in the Haiku area.

At about 7 a.m. Thursday, an officer located the stolen vehicle at a Kahiapo Place residence, with the driver still in it.

The officer ordered the driver to exit the vehicle; however, the driver ignored the commands and accelerated towards the driveway.

The driver did eventually get out of the vehicle, which started an on-foot chase between him and the officer.

Said officer used lethal-force, and his taser, when the driver failed to comply with his commands.

Medical assistance was requested and the officer placed the driver into a recovery position while they waited, and did not handcuff him.

The driver was then taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment.

An internal investigation into the incident has been initiated and the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave.
