Florida residents trapped by gators and snakes in floodwaters: ‘It’s like an apocalyptic-type event’

Floridians experienced an ‘apocalyptic-type event’ caused by heavy rains that left high floodwaters Getty Residents of a Florida community have been trapped in their homes for days by a historic rainstorm that left floodwaters high enough for fish, venomous snakes and alligators to swim right up to homes. Floridians in West Palm Beach’s Riverwalk community have been trapped in their homes, surrounded by nearly 10 inches of floodwater, after what was described as a one-in-1,000-year rain event dumped heavy showers across the region earlier this week. “It’s like an apocalyptic-type event,” resident Don Gentile told WPTV. Some parts of Palm Beach County were left with two to three feet of floodwater earlier this week after days of heavy rain. Roads were closed, and several polling locations were forced to relocate on Election Day Tuesday due to the flooding, according to 12 News. Other residents of the Riverwalk community said the flooding was unlike anything they’d ever seen before, as every street in the gated community had significant levels of flooding. No school Nov. 5 in Florida counties

Schools in Indian River and St. Lucie counties will remain closed Nov. 5 following the deluge of rains and flooding from earlier in the week, according to officials. While the Indian River County School District reports buildings are dry and secure with power and air conditioning, there are concerns about whether students and employees can travel safely to and from school. “Students need safe bus routes, roads, bridges, sidewalks, and pathways to reach school,” the district stated. “Many major roads remain closed across the county, including in South County and along the Oslo corridor . In parts of Highlands, roads remain unsafe and some homes are without power.” Nearly 100 employees can’t report to work “because of conditions in their areas.” Practice fields are closed, and extracurricular activities and practices are canceled until further notice. Schools in St. Lucie County also will be closed, according to spokesperson Lydia Martin. Nov. 2 was at least a 500-to-1,000-year rainfall event , said Robert Haley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Melbourne. St. Lucie County received varying amounts of rain that day, with the highest rainfall in the area of Interstate 95 into the Port St. Lucie area, which received about

Palm Beach board rejects zoning requests for Wells Fargo redevelopment

A plan to redevelop a portion of a key Midtown Palm Beach property has faced pushback from the Town Council at a recent meeting and from residents wary of the potential for overdevelopment in an already-busy area. And a recent recommended denial from the town's zoning board has prompted the developer to regroup. The project proposed building seven residential duplexes on what is now an expansive parking lot that is part of the Wells Fargo site on the northeast corner of South County Road and Royal Palm Way. Most of the development would be limited to the parking lot, which sits behind the block-long stretch of mostly landmarked buildings along the east side of South County Road, stretching from Royal Palm Way to Seaview Avenue. Palm Beach resident John Kean and his Kean Development Co. presented the plans to the Planning and Zoning Commission Nov. 3. The proposal called for the town to change the "future land use" regulations and zoning for roughly half of the 5.76-acre property. The project would be named "The East Plaza," the original moniker for the property when it was first planned in 1936, town records show. Zoning commissioners declined to endorse those changes to

The measure won about 62 percent of the vote statewide, two points more than the 60 percent it needed. It raises the homestead exemption for non-school property taxes from $50,000 to $150,000 in 2027, then to $250,000 in 2028. School districts were carved out of the larger exemption.
