CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. — In light of longtime Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves announcing his exit from office, his Chief Deputy has filed his candidacy for Sheriff.

Nathan Jones of Weir has spent the last eight years under Groves leadership.

He released a statement Sunday emphasizing the importance of continuing to fight crime by holding criminals accountable and in turn, “ensure Cherokee County is a safe place to live, work and visit.”

Chief Deputy Jones studied Criminal Justice at MSSU. He also completed the Law Enforcement Executive Leadership Trilogy through the FBI and was named the 2023 Kansas Sheriff Deputy of the Year.

He and his wife, Kaylee, have two boys.
