    JCPD: 1 dead, 1 seriously injured after wrong-way crash on I-26

    JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – One person was killed and another seriously injured after a crash on Interstate 26 in Johnson City Sunday night.

    According to the Johnson City Police Department (JCPD), officers were called to a two-vehicle crash at Exit 17 just before midnight.

    The JCPD reports a vehicle was heading in the wrong direction when it hit another vehicle head-on.

    The driver who was moving in the wrong direction received serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, according to the JCPD.

    The driver of the other vehicle that was hit died at the scene. The JCPD identified the deceased driver as Austin Teagarden, 27, of Knoxville.

    Police stated that the eastbound lanes of I-26 were closed between exits 13 and 17 (Gray and Boones Creek, respectively) for several hours. As of Monday morning, the lanes were open to traffic again.

    The JCPD reports that charges are pending against the injured driver who was traveling in the wrong direction. The JCPD’s Crash Reconstruction Team is continuing to investigate the crash.

    The Johnson City Fire Department, Washington County/Johnson City EMS, Tennessee Highway Patrol and Tennessee Department of Transportation assisted at the scene of the crash.
