‘Your car was exploding’: Driver rescued through sunroof, found with alcohol in lap following fiery crash

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Police who jumped in to save a driver through her sunroof were shocked to find more than just the woman in the driver’s seat.

“Your car is on fire, I need you to come out if you can,” the Georgia officer is heard telling the woman, identified as Alka Bharwaj.

Officers with the Johns Creek Police Department rushed to extinguish the flames of the driver’s flipped Range Rover.

“Yeah, your car was exploding we need to get you out of this vehicle.”

They communicated with the trapped woman, as she sat inside and waved at them before they broke open her sunroof.

“Ma’am you’re on the side of your vehicle you have to come through your [sun]roof,” a responding officer said.

After officials rescued Bharwaj and got her out of the vehicle, they found an open bottle of alcohol wedged between her legs, almost empty.

Bharwaj was charged with DUI, reckless driving, and having an open container, according to police.
