Jennings High School closed Monday due to threat

UPDATE, 4/15/24, 3:02 p.m.: Jeff Davis Parish Schools Superintendent John Hall announced that based on an update from local law enforcement regarding the ongoing search, all Jennings High School games and practices will be canceled on Monday.

The school says they will update those involved on the rescheduling of today’s games.

UPDATE, 4/15/24, 12:30 p.m.: Jennings Police are searching for a suspect in this incident, which they call an “active, ongoing situation.”

Police report a “large officer presence near Jennings High School and the I-10 corridor.”

The suspect, identified as Dillon Champagne, is believed to still be in the wooded area to the east of the high school, authorities said. Residents are advised to stay clear of the area, and that the Louisiana State Police Aviation unit will be in the area assisting with the search.

Also, the district announced it will be moving the Jennings vs. Lake Arthur baseball game to the City of Jennings Recreation Center, with the varsity game to start at 4 p.m.

ORIGINAL STORY: JENNINGS, La. ( KLFY ) — Jennings High School will not have school today due to “an external threat on campus this morning,” authorities said.

Police are at the school, and it is currently under investigation.

Jennings Police have released a photo of a suspect holding a gun.

In a Facebook post issued at 11:03 a.m. , Jeff Davis Parish Superintendent John Hall said law enforcement is still at Jennings High and collecting information.

“The person of interest has been identified,” the post read. “JHS was not targeted but, unfortunately, was located by where the person ran out of fuel on the interstate.”

Hall said the Jennings High baseball game scheduled for 6 p.m. is still up in the air.

“I will update everyone by early afternoon once we have more information to make a decision about our game tonight,” he said. “I will also confirm later today on the status of JHS opening tomorrow. Once again, thank you for all the support you have shown to our staff, students, and school system. I will keep you posted.”
