DES MOINES — A Black Hawk County supervisor is endorsing a no-party candidate for the U.S. House in Iowa. Dave Bushaw, a no-party candidate in Eastern Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District, is being endorsed by Black Hawk County Supervisor Justin Brandt, according to a Bushaw campaign press release. Republican Joe Mitchell, Democrat Lindsay James, and Libertarian Rick Stewart also are running in Iowa’s open-seat 2nd District election. Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson is running for the U.S. Senate. Bushaw is a folk musician and community and labor organizer from Hawkeye in Fayette County. In a statement in the Bushaw campaign press release, Brandt said he is “worn out from and am distrusting of many politicians.” “Do we really have to choose between the lesser of two evils? Roadwork prompts new traffic pattern along Mount Vernon Road

CEDAR RAPIDS — A new traffic pattern is coming to Mount Vernon Road SE to allow for ongoing improvements to the Cedar Rapids roadway. Effective Wednesday, crews will begin work on the center lanes of traffic on Mount Vernon Road SE between 20th and 26th streets. The outside lanes will open to traffic at a reduced speed of 25 mph. The change is part of ongoing improvements to the roadway being completed as part of the city’s Paving for Progress program. The work includes patching deteriorated concrete, replacing curb and gutters and paving an asphalt overlay. Sidewalk and accessibility improvements will be made on both sides of the roadway, as will transit stops within the project limits. For more information on the project, visit the city website.

Time Machine: Cedar Rapids Boat Club

The Cedar River played a big part in Cedar Rapids summertime entertainment in the 19th century. In 1929, Gazette Editor Harry E. Boyd wrote a story about the team of eight Cedar Rapids rowers who had won a state championship at Spirit Lake in 1885. “In two four-oar teams they propelled their shells over the mile course in 9:55 and 10 flat, which is better than some flivvers (Model Ts) will do.” “By this unprecedented exhibition of speed and skill they vanquished their old rivals, the Burlington Rowing Club and the Wapsipinicon Club of Clinton,” the story continued. “They received an ovation from the crowd and a large delegation of Cedar Rapids boosters who had ridden a special Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern excursion train to the races. “To celebrate their good fortune, the victorious Cedar Rapids boatsmen waited until the end of the night and then rolled a large barrel of bottled beer out on the lawn of the fashionable Hotel Orleans. They then proceeded to tap the barrel — and the bottles.” The excursion train that brought them home the next day was lavishly decorated with bunting in the boat club’s colors: cardinal, old gold and light blue.
