INOLA, Okla. — A new 4.4 mile railroad is operating at the Tulsa Port of Inola concluding a multi-year project to expand shipping capabilities.

The project was named the Verdigris Southern Railroad and connects the Union Pacific railroad to the Tulsa Port of Inola.

The project provides improved transportation options for the industrial park's current and future tenants.

Tulsa Ports says the four-year project was supported by public and private entities including Tulsa Ports, The United States Department of Transportation, The United States Maritime Administration, and the Oklahoma Department of Commerce.

"Today marks a pivotal moment in our journey towards economic prosperity and growth at the Tulsa Port of Inola," said David Yarbrough, Executive Director of Tulsa Ports in a press release. "With the operation of this new rail spur, we open doors to enhanced shipping capabilities for our current companies and extend a welcoming hand to future partners seeking a strategic location to grow their business in our region."

Tulsa Ports says construction of the project completed on March 29 and deliveries began Wednesday morning.

"The completion of this rail infrastructure is just one more step toward the tremendous growth that Rogers County and Inola could experience within the next few years," said Rogers County District 3 Commissioner Ron Burrows in a press release. "We are proud to have these unique transportation assets in our county."
