What's the story behind nearly-windowless AT&T building right by I-40?
Bad news first. Contrary to popular belief, the almost entirely windowless AT&T building at Broadway and Magnolia does not hold the Guinness World Record for closest building to an interstate. In fact, Guinness doesn't judge a record for that stat at all. But even if it's not a record-holding building, it's certainly an intriguing one, with its minimal windows and aesthetically-incohesive, mashed-together structures. It turns out it's quite old, too. The original parts of the structure at 410 W. Magnolia Ave. are over a century old, dating back to 1913. The name has changed over the years, with the building first housing the Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph Company, and later BellSouth. The building itself has grown, expanding to house Knoxville's telephone needs as technology has evolved − which it's done quite a bit since Alexander Graham Bell got his patent 150 years ago, way back in 1876. History of the mysterious AT&T building Construction of the building began for the Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph Company in 1912, 34 years after the first telephone was used in Knoxville in 1878. The Knoxville Sentinel assured readers in an article from September of that year "within the next few months Knoxville will have

Old Sevier Market Is Officially Open for Business
I live in South Knoxville and few things give me less pleasure than shopping at the “SoKnoKro” on Chapman Highway. I say this as someone whose previous neighborhood grocer was the Fellini Kroger, pre-renovation. The bar is low. I mean, they usually have what I need, and there are friendly employee faces I’m always relieved to see. But when it comes to ambiance, I cannot get out of that place fast enough.

Amentum, a Fortune 500 company with business lines ranging from spacecraft to environmental cleanup to immigrant detention , cut the ribbon Oct. 8 on a new global nuclear headquarters in Oak Ridge. The Virginia-based company employs 2,200 workers in East Tennessee as of 2026 and partners with Jacobs and Honeywell to operate the area’s leading environmental cleanup contractor for the Department of Energy, United Cleanup Oak Ridge. Amentum’s nuclear projects include supporting a plan to keep a South African reactor operating in the years ahead and decommissioning the Fukushima Daiichi power plant in Japan, where three reactors melted down in 2011. Oak Ridge’s support for nuclear energy and technology, along with the rise of private nuclear ventures in the area , helped Amentum decide where to put its new nuclear center, said Mark Whitney, president of the company's energy and environment business. Amentum employs about 50,000 people across the world and is excited about the possibilities Oak Ridge can provide, CEO John Heller told Knox News. “We have business lines that are going to be growing or contracting based on different economic trends,” he said, referencing Amentum layoffs in Florida. “The nuclear industry right now − because of AI, the
