    1 dead after carjacking in Indianapolis

    INDIANAPOLIS — One person is dead after a carjacking on the city’s near east side.

    According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, a carjacking was reported around 2:30 p.m. in the 2700 block of English Avenue — near Rural Street and Southeastern Avenue.

    The call originally came out as a “person down” run after a patrolling IMPD officer was flagged down to a gas station on English Avenue. Police said an adult male was found in the parking lot suffering from injuries caused by “trauma.”

    The victim ended up being transported to a hospital in critical condition but died at the hospital. The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified him as 51-year-old Shane Christian Coffman.

    IMPD learned the deadly incident stemmed from a carjacking. Officers sent out information about the stolen vehicle which ended up being spotted by a Speedway police officer.

    Police conducted a traffic stop on the stolen vehicle and detained one individual. At this time, IMPD is referring to the detained individual as a “person of interest.”

    At this time, no further information has been provided as the investigation remains ongoing.
