Rideshare driver rear-ends police car carrying prisoner

INDIANAPOLIS – An SUV rear-ended a police car early Thursday morning as officers were transporting a prisoner.

It happened around 1:30 a.m. at East Washington Street and North Emerson Avenue.

According to Indianapolis Metropolitan police, an officer was stopped at a red light when the SUV crashed into the back of the squad car.

The driver worked for a rideshare company and claimed to have hit the pedal instead of the brake, police said.

The officer was transporting a prisoner in the back of the squad car. The prisoner was taken to an area hospital after complaining of head and neck pain, although police said it was a formality and the individual was not seriously injured.

The SUV was towed away from the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
