IMPD: 2 arrested after drug transaction leads to traffic stop in northeast Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — Two individuals were arrested earlier this month by detectives with the Indiana Crimes Guns Task Force after they reportedly witnessed a drug transaction on the northeast side of Indianapolis.

According to a post on the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s social media, Dameontae Dabney was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of a machine gun and unlawful carrying of a handgun. Joseph Murphy was also arrested on preliminary charges of possession of and dealing in a narcotic drug and possession of and dealing marijuana.

On April 17, detectives conducted a traffic stop in the 3800 block of North Franklin Road after they reportedly witnessed a hand-to-hand drug transaction in a nearby neighborhood. The two individuals in the car, later identified as Dabney and Murphy, were then detained.

When detectives searched the vehicle, the post read that they found drugs, as well as a semi-automatic firearm with a high-capacity magazine loaded with more than 30 live rounds of ammunition. Officials said a machine gun conversion device was attached to the gun.

Officials said the investigation led detectives to a home in the 3800 block of Harvest Ave. During a search of the home, officials said they found an AR-pistol, firearms accessories, around 65 pills of a suspected controlled substance and more than one pound of marijuana.

IMPD said that the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will determine the final charges for Dabney and Murphy.
