County officials: ViaLC microtransit needs more funding to continue in 2027

ELYRIA — Without an additional $500,000 in funding before the year ends, the ViaLC microtransit van program could end Dec. 31, county officials said Tuesday. About 50 people, including local officials, ViaLC and Lorain County Transit riders and the media, attended a public hearing Tuesday at the county Transportation and Community Center on East Avenue when the possible end date was announced.

Shaker Heights Bus Depot Move Sparks Fears Over Kids, Traffic on Green Road

Fueling frustration. High diesel prices bring spike in heating costs

Seth Sigman thinks he's found a way to lower his fuel oil costs this year. He said he recently paid just under $1,200 for 214 gallons of fuel to heat his Rootstown home. Last year, he spent $800 on a similar amount of fuel. Usually, he needs to fill his tank twice to make it through the winter. Sigman, 31, had a wood burner in his garage, which he decided to put back into service to reduce his home's oil dependence. This year, he managed to find wood for $275 a cord and expects two cords will be enough to get through the season. "Next year, I'll probably chop the wood myself," he said. "I didn't have time to do that this year." Rising prices of diesel are fueling frustration among homeowners in rural areas, who are spending almost twice as much as last year to heat their homes for the winter. People who heat their homes with "fuel oil," diesel fuel that's dyed red to distinguish it from the fuel used to power vehicles, are paying almost twice as much per gallon as they did this time last year for the fuel, said Evelyn Cutlip, owner of Falls Home
