Two women arrested after police chase stolen truck

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Kan. (KOAM) -- Authorities arrest two female theft suspects following a police chase with a stolen vehicle.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the theft of a Penske box truck from Pete's Gas Station in Independence, Kansas. The caller told dispatch the stolen truck was traveling east on US-160, east of Independence.

Deputies quickly located the truck on US-160 and County Road 5100. The officers activated their lights and sirens; however, the driver failed to stop, leading to a vehicle pursuit. The police department says the vehicle turned north on US-169, where the Cherryvale Police Department joined the chase. They attempted to use spike strips to stop the truck, but their initial attempt with the spike strips was unsuccessful and the truck continued east on US-400.

The Parsons Police Department made an attempt to deploy spike strips, but the suspects made maneuvers to avoid them. The Labette County Sheriff's Office then joined the pursuit, with the truck weaving through county roads in Labette County before rejoining US-400 and heading into Cherokee County. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and Crawford County Sheriff's Office joined the pursuit. Authorities tried spike strips again and were able to stop the truck in the middle of the roadway.

Deputies arrested two female suspects and took them to the Montgomery County Department of Corrections. Authorities booked one of the suspects on multiple charges including fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement, theft, failure to stop at a stop sign, driving with a suspended license, and driving left of center. Authorities booked the second suspect on a theft charge.

Following the arrests, Montgomery County Sheriff Ron Wade praised the collaboration of the law enforcement.

"I want to commend all the agencies involved for their teamwork in bringing this dangerous situation to a safe conclusion. Our deputies and partners worked together to stop the truck and ensure the safety of our community," said Sheriff Ron Wade.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, the case has been forwarded to the County Attorney's Office for appropriate charging.
