Late winter always leaves me craving something hot, filling, and a little indulgent. That’s exactly when a good seafood buffet starts calling my name. These Memphis restaurants have permanently closed in 2026
The Memphis dining scene has lost two popular restaurants so far in 2026. One was a favorite neighborhood spot Downtown, while the other was among the most beloved in Midtown. A third restaurant appeared to permanently close in January, Carrington Oaks Coffeehouse in Collierville, but it quickly reopened following strong backing from the public. Here is a look at the two Memphis restaurants that have permanently closed. By the Brewery Downtown Memphis restaurant By The Brewery closed on Feb. 17 , following "significant damage" from January's winter storm. Owner Robin Joyce opened the breakfast and lunch spot at 496 Tennessee St. in 2021. The name referenced the nearby historic Tennessee Brewery. "This space has meant so much to us - a place of laughter, celebrations, and community in the heart of Downtown Memphis," a statement read. "Over time, ongoing challenges in the area and the realities of operating in this space have made it increasingly difficult to continue on in the way our customers and team deserve." Tsunami Beloved Memphis seafood restaurant Tsunami permanently closed on Feb. 21 . Since it first opened its doors in 1998 at 928 S. Cooper St., Tsunami was a staple of the Cooper-Young neighborhood,

Fascinating Food at Lao Sze Chuan
I am glad I met Jake Johnson. If I hadn’t, I might never have known about “Spicy Sour Pickled Snakehead Fish Fillet,” which is the most delicious new dish I’ve tried. Johnson is the general manager of the new Lao Sze Chuan at 5849 Poplar Avenue. He suggested some items to try, including my new favorite, which doesn’t actually include the head of a snake. “Snakehead” is a type of fish. Its head is the same shape as a water snake’s head. But his description got me. “A sautéed base made of fresh chilis, garlic, ginger, spring onions, and pickled mustard greens combined with a soft, delicate, fish stock. After it’s brought to a boil, rice vermicelli and thin sliced boneless fish filet are added to it.” It was out of this world.

I’ve chased burgers across states, but this Tennessee spot? Yeah… it hit different. One bite, and suddenly every “meh” burger I’d ever suffered through was just a bad memory. The patties? Juicy enough to make a steak jealous. The buns? Soft, pillowy perfection. And the...
