Yavasile football family legacy continues in Cowhide rivalry game
As a coach and spectator, the late John Yavasile attended every Cowhide high school football rivalry game between Mt. Whitney and Redwood since 1975. This year will be the first time John will not be in attendance. He died tragically in August after falling on his property in Visalia. However, for the first time in nearly three decades, a Yavasile will be taking the field as a player. Luke Yavasile — John's grandson. John was Redwood's head football coach from 1989 until his retirement after the 2010 season. His two sons, Jacob and Dustin, both played for dad. During his senior season, Jacob, a three-year varsity player, led the Rangers to the Central Section Yosemite Division championship in 1996. Dustin, who graduated in 2001, played in two Cowhide games. As a head coach, John went a remarkable 19-3 in the Cowhide. Jacob was undefeated in the rivalry game, going 3-0. Dustin was 1-1. Now, it's Luke's turn. "It feels pretty good," Luke said. "It feels good to continue my family, my dad and my grandpa's legacy. It's a pretty good feeling. It's going to feel like a dream come true." It's the final week of the Tulare County high school football regular season. That means it's rivalry week. Here are the top Tulare County games to watch in Week 11 (all games are on Friday, Oct. 30, unless noted), plus the Visalia Times-Delta's predictions. Tulare Western (8-1, 3-1) at Tulare Union (4-5, 2-2), 6:30 p.m., Bob Mathias Stadium A Tulare Western win clinches an outright East Yosemite League title for the Mustangs. If that happens, Tulare Union, Tulare Western, Central Valley Christian, Hanford and Redwood would all finish with a 3-2 record in EYL play. Recent history favors the Tribe, too. Tulare Union has won six straight Bell Games. Tulare Western's last Bell Game victory came in 2019. Tulare Union's Demaje Riley (39 catches, 727 receiving yards, five receiving touchdowns) and Tulare Western receiver Amarion Taylor (76 catches, 1,507 receiving yards, 23 receiving touchdowns) are two of the Central Section's premier wideouts.
