Visalia Times-Delta | Tulare Advance Register
Visalia stands out as post‑COVID population gains fade across U.S.
America’s largest cities were bouncing back from their post‑pandemic population losses — but not evenly. While most big metros stalled or slipped again in 2025 , Visalia was one of the few places still growing, adding 281 residents for a 0.19% increase and reaching a population of 146,541. Tulare is also up, with 1,084 new residents bringing the city population to 73,907, a 1.47% increase. Nearby Valley cities that lost population include Farmersville, Exeter and Porterville. Big cities lost population during the pandemic, with nearly half of the largest U.S. cities reporting fewer residents in 2022 than in 2020. By 2024, two-thirds of these cities had begun adding residents again. But in 2025, almost all of them saw that momentum fade, with many recording losses in residents again. Experts attributed much of it to one primary factor: a steep decline in net international migration. “Domestic migration is a kind of zero-sum. Some places lose numbers, some places gain them. But immigration is more broad-based across the country. That's why you can have much more of a pervasive decline," said William Frey, demographer with the Brookings Institution. New York City had lost more than 388,000 residents, or about 4.5% of its

Air Quality in the San Joaquin Valley: 2026 Update
Both the American Lung Association and the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District released their annual reports recently, and while there is some good news about recent progress being made, the overall message is that our air quality stinks. Clean air is vital for good health; long term exposure to bad air quality can intensify asthma, COPD, flu, pneumonia, heart disease, hypertension, and rheumatic fever, especially in those over 65. However, our bad air quality in the Valley isn't totally our fault - we get contributions from both near and far. Let's take a look at the reports.
