Hanford football ends Tulare Western's bid for perfect season
TULARE — Tulare Western's bid for a perfect high school football season came to an end on Thursday, Oct. 22, at Bob Mathias Stadium. Hanford intercepted Mustangs' quarterback Juju Hernandez five times, four of those in the second half, en route to a 42-25 win over previously undefeated Tulare Western. The Mustangs entered the game with an unbeaten 8-0 record, including a 3-0 mark in East Yosemite League play, but Hanford slowed down Tulare Western's explosive passing attack, receiving two interceptions from linebacker Adrian Ibarra and one each from defensive backs Kaelyn Burrell, Carsten Garvance, and Stefon Strickland. The Bullpups (7-2, 3-2) played outstanding defense from the get-go, forcing Tulare Western (8-1, 3-1) to a pair of three-and-outs to open the game. On the Mustangs' third offensive possession, Burrell intercepted a Hernandez pass on the first play in the second quarter. Tulare Western had only eight offensive plays in the opening period as Hanford bolted to a 12-0 lead behind quarterback Jerren Mao, who threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Braylan Thomas for the game's first score before finding paydirt on a three-yard run with 23 seconds left in that quarter. The Mustangs didn't convert a first down until the

Jerren Mao breaks new ground as Hanford's first Asian starting QB
HANFORD — Jerren Mao is blazing his own trail at one of Kings County's biggest high schools. Mao, of Cambodian descent, is the first Asian starting quarterback in Hanford High history. The Bullpups have been playing football since 1899. His journey to field general has been self-driven, with some help along the way. It started at 6 years old, when he was inspired by an older cousin who played football at Sunnyside High in Fresno. Mao began his football career at cornerback. But a few years later, Pop Warner coach Azvan Greenwood noticed Mao — not for his athleticism and playmaking abilities, but for his intelligence and football smarts. Mao was the smartest player on the field. For most coaches, the smartest player on the team is usually the quarterback. Soon after, Greenwood converted Mao to quarterback, and his career behind center took flight. Now, the 5-foot-11 Mao has Hanford (6-2, 2-2 East Yosemite League) in position to advance to the Central Section Division I playoffs for the fourth straight season. Since 2023, the Bullpups are the only program from either Kings or Tulare counties to reach the section's Division I postseason every year. This fall, Mao has helped pilot

US labor secretary visits Merced College to learn about AgTEC Innovation
U.S. Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling visited Merced College on Monday to see how the college is preparing workers for the future of agriculture through innovative training programs, advanced technology and industry partnerships. Sonderling toured the construction site of the AgTEC Innovation Center, a new facility designed to provide hands-on training in food processing, agricultural technology and related fields. The visit also highlighted the U.S. Department of Labor’s nearly $2 million investment in Merced College’s AgTEC Workforce Initiative. “American agriculture is quickly evolving with innovation and new technology increasing our production and providing more food and fuel to feed American families and power our economy,” Sonderling wrote in an Instagram post following the visit. “Thanks to partners like Merced College, the U.S. Department of Labor is leading the way to fund programs that ensure Americans are skilled in utilizing this new machinery to continue agricultural dominance.” Merced College President Chris Vitelli said the visit provided an opportunity to demonstrate how the college is translating federal investment into educational opportunities for students and the regional workforce. “We are grateful to Secretary Sonderling and the U.S. Department of Labor for their investment in the future of agricultural workforce development,” Vitelli said. “Agriculture
