‘It’s about to get real’ – Alabama prepares for giant step toward I-10 bridge project
MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Westbound traffic slowed to a crawl across the Bayway most of the day Monday. Even the Causeway was backed up. The Labor Day traffic jam fit a familiar summer holiday pattern, where travelers hit a bottleneck at the Wallace Tunnel. Alabama officials, though, are planning to take a giant step next week toward a project they hope will make Interstate 10 traffic jams mostly a thing of the past. By the end of next week, the Alabama Department of Transportation hopes to lock down the financing needed to pay for the $3.2 billion project.

Third northbound lane opens on I-59 in Trussville
Drivers can now use a newly widened section of Interstate 59 northbound in Trussville following the Labor Day weekend, according to the Alabama Department of Transportation. The project adds a third northbound lane between I-459 and Chalkville Mountain Road. ALDOT said nearly 63,000 motorists travel the 3.5-mile stretch in northeast Jefferson County each day, and the added lane should reduce congestion.

I-59 northbound ramps at Chalkville Mountain Road reopen in Trussville
Traffic began flowing on the reopened exit and entrance ramps June 26, according to ALDOT. The ramps had been closed since May 18 as part of the ongoing I-59 widening project. Contractor Wiregrass Construction Co. was incentivized to reopen the ramps within 40 days of the closure and did so ahead of schedule, ALDOT said.

Work to begin on US 31 access project
Work is expected to begin on the U.S. 31 access management project in Homewood in early fall, according to the Alabama Department of Transportation. ALDOT at press time was preparing to award the construction contract to the low bidder, Wiregrass Construction Co. The total construction bid was $3,319,179. A state grant is covering $1,962,282 of the cost, and the city of Homewood is paying the overage of $1,356,896. The work should take about nine months once it starts, according to ALDOT.
