On Tuesday, five A.J. Ellender Memorial High School athletes signed to play college sports in a ceremony held in the school's cafeteria.

Football players Andre Stewart and Southern LeBeouf opened the ceremony when they both signed to play for McDougle Technical Institute, a junior college in Florida.

"I'm just beyond blessed," said LeBeouf. "It took a lot of hard work and dedication to get here."

"It feels great, getting the chance to keep playing football and continue my academic career," said Stewart. "Nothing happens without God above. I'm just thankful for everything."

Volleyball players Bryana Young and Nigeria Williams followed up with their signings, both signing to play at Southern University at New Orleans.

"I can say I finally did it," said Young. "This is the happiest I've ever been. For my family and for myself."

"When I signed, I knew I was going to have a good future," said Williams. "I was ready to further my career."

Finally, Laijah Rockward signed with Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport. Rockward played both basketball and volleyball at Ellender, and she'll get the chance to play both sports again at the college level.

"It means a lot to play both sports," Rockward said. "It's a blessing. It's going to be a challenge to play two sports in college, but I feel like I'm mature enough and tough enough to take on the challenge."
