’Cats win five conference titles
Five gold medals and plenty of other colors came home with the Custer High School track team from last Friday’s Black Hills Conference meet, which was moved from Rapid City Christian to O’Harra Stadium on the campus of South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. The move was made due to soggy conditions at Rapid City Christian.
Where have all the volunteers gone?
Whether it’s the local fire department, service group or even a booster club, organizations throughout the country are struggling to find enough volunteers to stay alive. It’s no different in Custer, where you will frequently hear that certain events or organizations are in danger of going away due to a lack of volunteers. Perhaps exhibit A of that is that there will be no arts and crafts fair this year during the Old Time Country Fourth, and our 1881 Courthouse Museum has scaled back hours as it relies entirely upon volunteers.
List of Mini Golf Courses in the Black Hills
Mini-golf season is in full swing for South Dakota. Here’s a list of mini-golf courses in the Black Hills. Located at Deadwood Comfort Inn and Suites, this 18-hole course is themed around a mining town in the Old West. Players are taken through a colorful environment featuring a mining cart track, high-spraying geyser fountains and a house with a water wheel. Players can spin the Western Spinners on some holes to be assigned extra instructions. For instance, if the spinner lands on “Tombstone”, the player’s opponent will stand on the course and act as an extra obstacle to play around.

Pool feasibility discussed
A meeting was held last Thursday to understand potential yearly operational costs for the coming Custer Community Campus. The project is led by Tallgrass Landscape Architecture of Custer. Owners Matt Fridell and Tanya Olson gave the presentation and then led attendees through an exercise to better understand operational costs and how that will impact what kind of facility may be affordable on a year-over-year basis. It was noted this meeting is solely about yearly operational costs and would not cover the construction cost of the facility.
