FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY: Widespread Rain, Chance of Flooding Starting Tuesday
TUESDAY - WEDNESDAY: Today is a First Alert Weather Day, as excessive rainfall is expected. Steady rain will push through portions of southeastern ND and west-central MN on Tuesday morning. The rain, connected to a low moving through MN, will last throughout the afternoon and evening hours, mostly coming down in the southern Red River Valley and most of Lakes Country. A few downpours may be embedded in the steady rain, which means a slick, difficult commute in some areas on Tuesday night. It will also be a windy Tuesday, with wind gusts coming from the north-northeast at up to 40 to 50 mph and sustained winds around 20 to 30 mph. That could knock down trees dealing with soils weakened by the rain, so we’re watching carefully. It’s not until Wednesday morning that the rain exits to the northeast, leaving behind cloudy skies, breezy northerly winds, and highs in the mid-60s for Wednesday afternoon. Rainfall totals may be 3-5″ in the eastern half of Lakes Country and 2″ to 3″ in the western half of Lakes Country. Those rainfall totals mean a risk of overland flooding in some areas, especially those that have seen a lot of moisture in the past few days, as well as rising river levels. So stick with us as we’ll give you updates on this situation. Thankfully, to the west, amounts drastically drop by the time you get into eastern ND. In the Fargo-Moorhead area, around 1″ to 2″ of rain is possible. Around a half an inch in Grand Forks. Little to no rainfall in places like the James River Valley and the Devils Lake Basin.
