Historic Bracero site vandalized with 'hateful' graffiti in Socorro
A historic bracero farmworker site in Socorro was vandalized with a swastika and other hateful graffiti more than a week after a separate controversy involving a group dressed as the Ku Klux Klan in El Paso . The graffiti appeared overnight on a building at the Rio Vista Civic Center, which housed a processing center for Mexican farmworkers in the Bracero Program , which began during World War II to address a U.S. labor shortage, Socorro city spokesman Victor Reta said on Thursday, Nov. 5. The graffiti in black spray-paint included a large swastika, a racial slur against Blacks and a curse phrase against "ICE" (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement), according to Reta and a photo Socorro Mayor Rudy Cruz Jr. shared on a Facebook post. The vandalism is under investigation by the Socorro Police Department. 'It shows zero class.'
