Hall of Famer Johnny Mize, Demorest highlighted in book that was a long time in the making
Although Baseball Hall of Famer Johnny Mize plied his trade in St. Louis and New York City and spent a memorable winter in the Dominican Republic, he is most closely associated with Demorest, Georgia, the Habersham County town of his birth. Author Jerry Grillo, who worked for the Athens Banner-Herald and Daily News as a copy editor and reporter in the early 1990s, was interested in Mize as the subject for a book, in no small part...
Meals on Wheels needs Donor Support
Hunger knows no season, so the Habersham County Senior Center is reaching out to the community to help fulfill its mission of feeding the community’s elderly population through Meals on Wheels for the next six weeks. State and federal funding for the Meals on Wheels program has run out, leaving Senior Center Director Kathy Holcomb hoping local residents, organizations, churches, and even city governments will chip in a combined $10,000 to keep the program solvent until the new fiscal year begins on July 1. Sometimes a hot, home-delivered meal may be the only meal a senior will eat that day, Holcomb said, and anyone in the community can help to make sure each senior continues to receive daily food. Meals on Wheels support through the gift certificate program is open to anyone who would like to help. A student can donate $6 to purchase one meal for a senior citizen in need. A couple can donate $42 to cover a senior’s meals for a week, or a family can donate $186 to feed a senior for a month. A local church or civic club might choose to pay for three months of meals at a cost of $558. Those who are able to do more might donate $1,116 to purchase meals for six months, or $2,232 to pay for meals for a year. The above are only suggestions based on actual costs of feeding the community’s senior citizens. Other amounts also are accepted. Checks may be made payable to the Habersham County Senior Center, 217 Scoggins Drive, Demorest, GA 30535. For more information, call (706) 839-0260.
