LA-Coachella Valley train inefficient; not worth the money
The Desert Sun's recent editorial supporting the Los Angeles to Coachella Valley train project fails to address significant problems with the +$1 billion proposal. The editorial complains about the "four-hour nightmare" drive from the valley to LA. But guess how long the planned train service is expected to take? Approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes. The train terminates in LA's Union Station. Now you need to somehow get to your final destination, which might be longer than the existing four-hour nightmare. The editorial also highlights the "obvious benefit of getting to LA for a concert at the Hollywood Bowl or a Dodgers game." That sounds great. But the plan calls for just two trains a day, with the last one leaving LA at 3:20 p.m. So much for getting the train back home after the concert or game.It would be great to have a European-style high-speed train to get us to LA faster than driving. I'd support that. But this slow and limited train service is not worth the money and won't likely have many passengers.
