Jackson chef among two Mississippi nominees in James Beard semifinals
Jackson chef Hunter Evans and Biloxi chef Austin Sumrall are representing Mississippi once again as semifinalists in the prestigious 2026 James Beard Awards. For more than 35 years, restaurateurs throughout the nation have sought recognition from the James Beard Foundation, a national nonprofit named after the renowned chef, cookbook author and television personality James Beard. The foundation annually recognizes exceptional culinary talent with semifinalist and finalist rounds of awards. In total, the "Best Chef: South" category has 20 semifinalists from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Puerto Rico. Both Evans and Sumrall were semifinalists in 2025, but did not advance to finalist status. This year, Mississippi only appeared in the "Best Chef: South" category. Other categories outside of the regional chef categories include "Outstanding Restaurateur," "Best New Restaurant," "Outstanding Hospitality" and more. In 2025, Vestige, an Ocean Springs restaurant specializing in market-driven tasting menus, was a semifinalist in the "Outstanding Hospitality" category, but did not advance to finalist status. The James Beard Foundation will announce restaurant and chef nominees on March 31, and winners will attend an awards ceremony on June 15 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Comforting Food in a Welcoming Environment at Zea Rotisserie and Bar in Ridgeland
Zea Rotisserie and Bar is a regional chain based in Louisiana, and one of those kind of places that looks good, but which I had always avoided because it was a chain. But on the Friday after Thanksgiving, in the Jackson, Mississippi area, finding a place to meet for a lunch with friends and relatives proved difficult. Not only was our first choice closed for the day, but also our second choice. Being in the city of Ridgeland, just north of Jackson, Mississippi, the nearest choice to where we were was a location of Zea and when we called them they were open. So we went, and found them rather crowded.

Hidden in plain sight on a modest street in Amory, Mississippi, Bill’s Hamburgers serves a chicken sandwich so transcendent it defies logic that a place with “hamburgers” in its name could master poultry perfection. The unassuming brick building with its cheerful red and white striped awning has...
