HOLLAND — Sprinkles Donut Shop recently opened in downtown Holland, about four doors down from The Sentinel offices, and we couldn't resist a taste test.
This time, we included local editor Cassandra Lybrink, taste test extraordinaire Mitchell Boatman, and unofficial Sentinel IT assistant Austin Lybrink.
Vanilla Yeast with Sprinkles Donut
"This is a really good vanilla. I'm on my fifth test and I'll probably never eat anything sweet again, but this still hits the mark." — Cassandra
"An amazing sugary concoction that melted in my mouth." — Austin
“A fine donut. I’m not the biggest vanilla frosting fan personally, but there’s nothing to complain about here. If you’re in the market for a classic, simple donut, you won't be disappointed.” — Mitchell
Chocolate Yeast with Sprinkles Donut
"This hits the spot. I love a good, light, chocolate sprinkle donut. Uncomplicated. I can't think of a single bad thing to say." — Cassandra
"A familiar taste with a subtle hint of Sprinkle's love." — Austin
“For me, this is as classic as it gets in the donut game, and it’s done well here. Nice chocolatey frosting on a light donut with a handful of sprinkles. What’s not to like?” — Mitchell
Cinnamon Roll Donut
"Very light and fluffy. It doesn't taste exactly like a cinnamon roll. It tastes like a cinnamon roll donut. I don't know how else to explain it. It's got just a hint of cinnamon there, but it's mostly frosting-y, donut-y goodness." — Cassandra
"Breathtaking. The only way it could've been better was warm." — Austin
“Good cinnamon roll flavor without the heaviness or denseness you can get with a cinnamon roll. Definitely a solid option.” — Mitchell
Devil's Food Cake Donut
"This is the only cake donut in the bunch. It's not bad, by any means, but I think I would've preferred a stronger chocolate flavor. It reads almost a little bitter, like a dark chocolate would." — Cassandra
"Not sure. I'm mixed." — Austin
“I’m a big chocolate fan, so I was looking forward to this one. It was good, but it left me wanting a stronger chocolate flavor.” — Mitchell
Cherry Chip Muffin
"There's definitely a light cherry flavor, and it's very dense and moist. I expected it to taste like cherry chip cake, and it does. But there's no way I could eat a whole muffin of this flavor by myself. Three bites was enough!" — Cassandra
"It tastes just like a cherry chip cake. I prefer it without the glaze on top." — Austin
“I’ll be the contrarian, because I really enjoyed this. The glaze on top was a little weird, but my bites without the glaze were my favorite bites of the day. A lot of good cherry flavor.” — Mitchell

We purchased five donuts, one muffin and two pints of milk for $14, which felt super reasonable. Each donut, no matter the flavor, was $1.50, while muffins ranged from $2-$2.50. A rare thing these days, no individual pastry or drink on the menu exceeded $2.50. The most expensive item was a bag of popcorn for $5.99.
