Derby winner Golden Tempo goes for more history at Breeders' Cup

It's been a big year for trainer Cherie DeVaux, who became the first woman to train a Kentucky Derby winner when Golden Tempo won nearly six months ago. Now, the trainer and colt are vying to make more history this weekend as the 43rd Breeders' Cup takes place at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky. However, that duo is not the only one trying to get into the record books. Golden Tempo, who also won the Belmont Stakes in June, will try to become just the fifth 3-year-old to claim both the Derby and the Breeders' Cup Classic, the $7 million, 1-1/4 mile showcase on Saturday that caps two days of championship racing, in the same year. Authentic was the last to do it in 2020. While Golden Tempo seeks a rare double, a Japanese-bred horse is out to become just the second horse to win the Classic twice. Forever Young won it last year at Del Mar, edging Sierra Leone by a half-length. Tiznow pulled off the double in 2000 and '01. Forever Young, who is the morning-line favorite at 2-1, ran a half-mile in 50.2 seconds Wednesday on the training track. It was an effort that left his trainer Yoshito

Meet the new Parisian baker firing up her ovens just south of Lexington

When Deborah Lomama moved to Kentucky two years ago to be with her husband, who had family and a job here. Originally from Paris, Lomama didn’t love that she couldn’t find the kinds of breads and baked goods she grew up with. So she started making them herself and eventually went back to France to study with a chef. When she returned, she began selling authentic pastries at local markets. She hoped to get a food truck, but an opportunity presented itself, and now she’s opening Sweet Elikya, the bakery of her dreams, in the Brannon Crossing shopping center. “I’m originally from Paris, France, born and raised, and I’m excited to open Sweet Elikya French Bakery in Nicholasville,” Lomama said. The bakery is named for her daughter and means “hope” in Lingala, the language of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is where her husband and her father are both from. Lomama said her daughter was born with a heart defect, so the name is a tribute to her. “It’s not just a name for me,” she said. Her daughter is now 5, in kindergarten and doing well, she says. When will it open, what’s on the menu? Lomama plans

Lexington Mexican restaurant reopens after 2 weeks. Why health department shut it down

A popular Mexican restaurant has reopened after more than two weeks in health department shutdown. According to the restaurant’s social media, it reopened on Friday afternoon. The health department confirmed that it had been approved to resume food service. Why was Jalapeno’s closed? Jalapeno’s Restaurant at 1030 S. Broadway was shut down by the health department on Oct. 14 after the inspector found evidence of rodents and live roaches. According to the health department, the inspector reported rodent droppings inside containers storing taco shells, on shelving and on container lids, and a live cockroach was seen in the kitchen on the floor of the prep line area. The inspector also noted food improperly stored, improper sanitizing, meat skewers not kept cold enough for food safety, and employee’s personal medication stored with food in the walk-in cooler, among other issues. After the restaurant was closed, a licensed pest control operator was required to come in. Jalapeno’s was re-inspected on Oct. 21 and had made good improvement, but roach activity was still present and further treatment was required. On Oct. 23, the restaurant was allowed to reopen with a score of 98 out of 100. Why the health department closes restaurants The
