Governor Tim Walz proclaims May 13-19 Salvation Army Week in Minnesota

HIBBING—May 13 marked the start of National Salvation Army Week—a week that has celebrated Salvation Army supporters for 70 years—and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has proclaimed this week to be Salvation Army Week in Minnesota also.

Lieutenant Victoria Alip and Captain Kenneth Alip, Corps officers at the Hibbing Salvation Army expressed their appreciation for the governor’s support in a news release.

“We are humbled by Governor Walz’s acknowledgement of the work of The Salvation Army in providing support to those Minnesotans most in need,” reads a statement by the Alips. “It’s also the support of generous Minnesotans who have allowed us to serve this state for the last 137 years, as we will continue to do well into the future.”

In his proclamation, Governor Walz recognized that “The Salvation Army serves all communities, especially during times of crisis, providing essential support to vulnerable individuals and families at risk of homelessness, hunger, addiction, or spiritual distress.”

The governor added that Salvation Army Week “encourages people in Minnesota to dedicate their time and resources to neighbors in need and contribute to their communities in ways that are personally meaningful.”

The United States Congress and President Dwight Eisenhower proclaimed the first National Salvation Army Week back in 1954 as a reminder to Americans that there are those needing help, saying, “Among Americans, The Salvation Army has long been a symbol of wholehearted dedication to the cause of brotherhood,” accord

This year’s observance is especially important because of the surge in demand for food and housing assistance that the organization is seeing—a direct result from higher food, fuel, and housing costs, according to the Alips.

Last year, nearly 19,000 volunteers and countless donors helped The Salvation Army Northern Division provide food, shelter, youth services, disaster relief and more to 260,000 people.

“We give thanks for the army of dedicated volunteers and donors who support us, enabling us to serve everyone who comes to The Salvation Army seeking help,” Victoria Alip wrote. “Not only is Salvation Army Week a time of thanks, it’s also a time for new volunteers and donors to consider joining our important mission.”
