The Village of Hewlett Harbor is going to be a gated community - sort of.

New gates are being installed at major streets along the village’s border as a way to limit outside traffic.

Village officials believe this will limit cut-through traffic, which they attribute as the cause of car thefts and home break-ins in the area.

Mayor Mark Weiss sent residents a letter last month, informing them of the test program, which will have manually operated security gates that block off four streets during the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Mayor Weiss tells News 12 they are working with local police and fire departments as well as emergency services to make sure the gates do not cause an inconvenience for residents. The program will run for six months and then be re-evaluated.
