The Hayward Hurricanes girls track and field team won the Heart O’ North Conference Indoor Championships for the fourth year in a row while the Hurricane boys team finished second out of nine schools Friday April 12 at the Ashland Fieldhouse.

“I am very happy with these results as we close our indoor season and move into outdoor season” said Coach Ben DiSera. “This meet is usually a pretty good indicator of how we stack up against the rest of the teams in our conference and gives us a look at what our competition will be like as we move forward.

“Our girls team is truly top-notch and they continue to work hard in order to keep it that way,” the coach added. “We’ve obviously had some great success the past few years and we are working to keep building on that foundation as new athletes join the team.

“Last year our boys team placed third in the indoor conference meet and third in the outdoor conference meet. Coming in second is a huge win for the boys as a team and they are hungrier than ever to keep getting better and keep working hard toward the goal of winning a championship as well. I’d say based on what I’ve seen so far this season that their goal is absolutely attainable.

“It was an especially successful night for sophomore Lucas Hansen. He put on an all-conference performance on Friday, placing first in the 55m hurdles, 200m hurdles and long jump and anchored our 4x400m relay team which also placed first. Hansen scored a total of 32.5 points for the team and was the top point-scorer of the night.

“The difference in Lucas from his freshman year to this year is night and day,” DiSera added. “He joined the team last year as a very talented freshman with a great work ethic and did very well, but this year it is like his body caught up to his brain. He is really explosive and is already beating his best marks from sectionals last year by a good margin and I’m excited for outdoor season to start for him.”
