Despite fractured cheekbone, Malta native Sophia Stiles living NCAA tourney dream
MISSOULA — Sophia Stiles' college basketball career has been fruitful and fraught with danger. There were the knee and shoulder surgeries in her five years on the Montana Lady Griz team. Then just last week she fractured her cheekbone playing guard for Florida Gulf Coast in an Atlantic Sun Conference tournament semifinal against Austin Peay.
Purdue wrestler Parker Filius of Havre places 7th at NCAA mat meet
TULSA, Okla. — Sixth-year Purdue graduate student Parker Filius of Havre placed seventh at 141 pounds at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships here on Saturday. It is the first time the four-time State A champion earned an All-American finish. He is a four-time NCAA Championships qualifier at 141 pounds, having competed at the meet the past three seasons. The 2020 NCAA meet was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, although Filius qualified for the meet at the Big Ten Championships.
Blizzard Conditions Faced Across Hi-Line
Winter weather hit northeast Montana last week, with snow and gusty winds wreaking havoc on the area. The National Weather Service in Glasgow issued a Winter Storm Warning for southern Valley, Phillips and Roosevelt counties March 10. NWSG meteorologist Grant Hicks told the Northern Plains Independent that the blizzard was effectively over by Saturday at 6 p.m.

Lady Cougars cap off strong season at state
The Lady Cougars matched up with the Malta M-Ettes in the first round of the Class B State tournament last Thursday night in Great Falls. The girls showed their presence and competed well against the first-place seed from the Northern Division, down by only 4 points at the half. Although they followed the game plan they had set up for themselves, they let a good Malta shooter get loose a few too many times and she made them pay. The Cougars dropped their first game, 38-45.
Motivational Event Coming to Dodson
An event aimed to empower people is coming to Dodson soon. Wesley Killeagle Jr. the host of the event explains more. “We got a couple motivational speakers coming in. We got Kia Stewart, he’s a 145-pound fighter. He’s ranked number one right now. We got Billy Wagner who is out of Browning who in October fought Niko Walsh Ali, that’s Muhamed Ali’s grandson and then we got Dave Evans coming in to do a talk. He is a trainer out of Great Falls. He works with both these fighters. They’re coming in April 1st to Dodson, Montana to give an anti-bullying motivational speech kind of thing to help curb the bullying epidemic that’s going on hopefully curb the suicide epidemic as well.” -Wesley Killeagle Jr.
LHS teacher Michael O'Malley is ready to retire
Michael O’Malley, a social studies teacher at Laurel High School, grew up in Big Sandy, which is a small, small town 30 miles south of Havre. “It was all dirt roads. We only had one paved street and only one street light,” O’Malley explained. In high school, he played basketball for four years and was a track runner for four years. Running became part of his personality, as he participated in road races for 20 years after high school.
Harlem Car Show Cancelled
Unfortunately, the snow over the weekend prevented the Harlem car show. Max Cederburg the chairman for the show explains the cancellation. “We had a really bad storm all day Friday, and pretty much all of the Northern part of the state was bad. So, the people that had committed called and said they weren’t going to be able to make it, and then of course Saturday morning when we got up was so much snow and our roads hadn’t been plowed yet and was blocked. So, we decided to call it off. It’s the first time since we started doing the car show, it’s probably been 30 years that we haven’t had to completely cancel. We’ve had some pretty bummy days and not too many entries, but we’ve always had a few. So, it’s just the way the circumstances were.” -Max Cederburg.

Reclamation awards $43.5M contract for modifications at Fresno Dam
BILLINGS, Mont. — The Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $43,599,090 contract to NW Construction out of Bozeman, Montana to conduct a dam modification to Fresno Dam. Project construction is scheduled to begin in April 2023. The Tailwater Fishing Access Site will be closed to public access once construction starts.
