Keefer House ex-manager blames contractor, CL for delays
HILLSDALE — A former executive for the redevelopment of the Keefer House Hotel says years of delayed decisions and problems with the project's original contractor significantly slowed restoration. Nick Fox, former vice president of construction management for CL Real Estate Development , is no longer affiliated with the project and hasn't been involved for months — according to an interview with The Hillsdale Daily News. During a conversation Aug. 25, Fox said repeated extensions stemmed largely from what he described as CL's reluctance to make major decisions, including replacing the project's original general contractor. "I was hired to fix that project," Fox told The Daily News. "The minute I came on ... (I said) they should get rid of Phoenix. ... They wouldn't let me do that for three years." The project aims to transform the long-vacant historic building into a boutique hotel with a restaurant and two retail spaces at the corner of Howell Street and McCollum Street. The proposal has received local support and public incentives, but construction has taken significantly longer than anticipated (completion was originally slated for November 2022). Hillsdale City Council approved the company's most recent extension request in June, pushing the deadline for completion
