Brick Memorial knocked out of football state tournament by Millville
BRICK -- The onslaught of rain and mud was meant to be a home field advantage in the state playoffs. Instead, Mother Nature helped usher in a painful turning point for top-seeded Brick Memorial football. The Mustangs were trailing 13-7 at halftime against South Jersey power Millville, but they received the kickoff to start the third quarter. An errant snap turned the ball over to the Thunderbolts just outside the red zone, and the very next play Reggie Holley went 26 yards to the end zone for his third touchdown and he added the two point-conversion. Brick Memorial never recovered. Brick Memorial (9-2) had hoped to avenge a lopsided loss in the 2024 sectional final, but instead Millville (6-4) proved their perennial contender status with a 24-7 victory Friday night to advance to the Central Group 4 section final against Atlantic City. "Our kids are tough, man," Brick Memorial head coach James Mahoney said. "Regardless of what the score was, they're gonna continue to compete and they're gonna let it all hang out on the field. Credit our boys, it could have went a lot worse than it did at some points, and our kids bucked down and stuck together.
