NASA citizen scientists collected thousands of photographs and temperature readings that are being used to study the relationship between total solar eclipses and clouds. For many people who traveled long distances and faced epic traffic jams to reach the path of totality of the April 8, 2024, total solar eclipse, clouds loomed as the potential spoiler. The wrong type of cloud in the wrong location at the wrong time could easily ruin the ethereal view of the Sun’s corona shimmering around the silhouette of the Moon that eclipse watchers sought.

Spate of tornadoes outpaces average
April was a busy month for tornadoes across the United States with 373 recorded, bringing the total for the year to 549, the Austin American-Statesman reported. That is nearly double the average at this point in the year, the National Weather Service says.
