    Harlingen neurosurgeon’s medical license reinstated following acquittal

    HARLINGEN, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — A Harlingen physician’s medical license was reinstated after he was found not guilty of a manslaughter charge.

    The Texas Medical Board reinstated Dr. Ameer Hassan’s medical license last month, according to state records.

    On April 18, the executive director of the Texas Medical Board entered an order that rescinded the temporary suspension of Hassan’s license.

    “The Board found that on April 16, 2024, the Honorable Judge Gloria Rincones of the 44th District Court of Cameron County, Texas entered a judgement of acquittal by jury,” the Texas Medical Board stated.

    It was first announced on Oct. 24, 2023, that Hassan’s medical license would be suspended after he was indicted by a grand jury on a charge of second-degree manslaughter.

    Hassan, a triple board certified neurologist, was found not guilty on a charge of manslaughter in the death of San Juana Benavidez Sanchez.

    At the trial, jurors watched the complete video of the deadly crash and the aftermath. They also heard from a forensic pathologist and Harlingen investigators.

    After the verdict, Hassan reiterated that it was a terrible accident, and that he hopes Sanchez’s family can find peace.
