No lingering danger from food facility trailer fire, Hanover area fire officials say

A burning trailer was quickly knocked down by Hanover firefighters at a Penn Township factory Monday morning.

Firefighters were called to the fire at the Hanover Foods Frozen Cold Storage Facility on the 1100 block of Wilson Avenue in Penn Township at 10:25 a.m. Monday, according to York County 911 records.

When they arrived, firefighters found fire showing from a trailer parked in a bay of the building. They knocked down the flames utilizing a single hoseline.

The fire involved a refrigeration unit on the front of the trailer, said Tony Clousher, Hanover Area Fire & Rescue chief.

The trailer was empty, Clousher said, but a diesel tank that runs the refrigeration unit had just been filled with roughly 60 gallons of diesel.

Hazmat team called to help with fire

Due to concern that diesel might leak from the destroyed refrigeration unit, a duty officer from the York County Hazardous Materials team was called to the scene, Clousher said.

The team was able to determine, by testing the PH of the runoff, that diesel was not leaking from the damaged trailer, Clousher said.

The fire was contained to the trailer, he added, though minor amounts of smoke had gotten inside the building. Firefighters cleared the smoke using fans, and Clousher believed the fire wouldn't affect operations of the facility.

Clousher said the bulk of the damage was to the refrigeration unit, and the trailer itself would likely still be usable after cleaning and repairs.

No injuries were reported.
