Tornadoes ripped through the Midwest on Thursday, causing havoc in Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio.

Despite the damage incurred across the Midwest, only Ohio is currently reporting fatalities. That could change, however, as crews continue to sift through the rubble left in the devastating wake of multiple tornadoes.

Three were reported along the Indiana and Kentucky border alone, though assessments are ongoing to determine if some of those reports may be a single tornado that impacted multiple areas.

Here's what you need to know about Thursday's tornadic weather:

Where in Kentucky did a tornado hit Thursday?

Trimble County Emergency Management Director Andrew Stark confirmed at least 50 structures — including homes — were damaged where a tornado had touched down in Milton, just south of Madison.

More than 4,100 people in Trimble County were without power. No fatalities were reported.

Where in Indiana did tornadoes touch down?

Indiana Emergency Management Agency officials said another tornado touched down outside Madison, Indiana, around 2:30 p.m. in Hanover.

The weather service has also confirmed an EF1 tornado touched down southwest of Vevay in Switzerland County, Indiana. Survey teams are conducting a storm survey in the area and in locations further east into Carroll County, Kentucky.

It is unclear whether one or two tornadoes caused the damage in Milton and Hanover.

The Louisville National Weather Service has categorized the tornado or tornadoes as EF2.

More tornadoes hit Indiana to the north

Possible tornadoes that ripped through Delaware and Randolph counties left dozens of residents injured and over 100 structures damaged or destroyed Thursday evening.

Initial National Weather Service storm reports indicate damage to homes and trees in Selma — a small community just east of Muncie — around 7:39 p.m., with a possible tornado. By 8:03 p.m., severe wind damage was reported in nearby Winchester, with pictures, videos and reports indicating a tornado had moved through the area. The weather service has determined the Winchester tornado was an EF3.

How are tornadoes rated?

The Enhanced Fujita Scale classifies tornadoes into the following categories:

  • EF0: Weak, with wind speeds of 65 to 85 mph.
  • EF1: Weak, 86 to 110 mph.
  • EF2: Strong, 111 to 135 mph.
  • EF3: Strong, 136 to 165 mph.
  • EF4: Violent, 166 to 200 mph.
  • EF5: Violent, greater than 200 mph.

The Columbus Dispatch and The Louisville Courier-Journal contributed to this report.
