GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — An infant died after a crash in Greensboro earlier this month, and a driver faces several charges, according to a Guilford County Sheriff’s Office news release.

On April 16 around 11:17 p.m., a deputy with the GCSO attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Pleasant Garden Road near Industrial Avenue.

Serious injuries reported after school bus crash in High Point

The driver, later identified as Alton Johnny Bright Jr., 28, of Greensboro, accelerated to a high rate of speed and drove away from the deputy.

The deputy followed Bright Jr. for about a mile when the vehicle crashed in front of Vandalia Christian School.

At the time of the crash, the deputy was still far behind Bright Jr. He ran away from the scene, while deputies rendered aid to the people in the crashed vehicle.

Warrants were obtained for Bright Jr. for the following charges:

  • felony speed to elude
  • possession of a firearm by a felon
  • possession of a stolen firearm
  • possession of marijuana
  • careless and reckless driving
  • speeding

Bright Jr. was served all active warrants on Wednesday, and the following charges were added:

  • felony hit-and-run with serious injury
  • possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver a Schedule III controlled substance

Bright Jr. received no bond and was taken to the Greensboro Detention Center.

His first appearance in court was Thursday, and he received a $100,000 secured bond then.

On Tuesday, the GCSO reported that a two-month-old who was in the vehicle died from injuries sustained during the crash.

One adult and two juveniles who were also in the vehicle have non-life-threatening injuries.

Because of the child’s death, an additional arrest warrant for Bright Jr. was obtained for second-degree murder in connection with the incident.

Bright Jr. was served with the warrant and is currently in custody at the Greensboro Detention Center under no bond.
