Not much went right for the South Greene Lady Rebels in their home softball game against Cocke County on Wednesday.

In a 9-1 loss, the Lady Rebels mustered just three hits off Lady Red pitcher Hailee Hartsell.

“We got beat by a good team,” South Greene Coach Amy Hawk said. “They hit the ball, but I feel like we battled to the end. We never got our bats started. We had a little here and there, but we just got beat by a good team.”

Cocke County scored one run in the first and two in the second, holding a 3-0 lead after three innings.

South Greene’s Haven Carter hit a single in the first and Kortnei Bailey hit another single in the third.

The Lady Red doubled their score in the fourth, taking a 6-0 lead before adding three more in the sixth to make it 9-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, South Greene’s Katie Willett worked a walk and stole second a few pitches later.

Madison Hensley singled on a bunt, beating the throw to first and advancing Willett to third.

Carter grounded out but managed to drive Willett in for the Lady Rebels’ lone run.

The game ended 9-1 after six innings.

“They have a really good pitcher,” Hawk said. “We haven’t seen that tough of one in the last several games. They are tough on offense, defense, all the way around. And I like to play good teams, the girls like to play good teams and be challenged. If we can play people like (Cocke County) and battle people like that, then I think that’ll help us in the long run.”

Hartsell pitched a complete game for the Lady Red, striking out seven and walking two. She gave up just three hits and one earned run.

Kaylee Whitson took the loss in the circle for South Greene. She pitched a complete game, giving up 12 hits and eight earned runs. She walked one and struck out none.

Carter, Bailey and Hensley had the only hits for the Lady Rebels.

“Just being prepared to play that kind of competition and be ready for that,” Hawk said of what her team can learn from this loss. “I feel like it makes you step your game up.”

The loss drops South Greene to 9-4.
