The real Hope-Calvin football rivalry begins this week in undefeated clash
The introduction to the Hope-Calvin football rivalry has come and gone. This year, the real rivalry begins. The first two years, Calvin didn't have a home stadium and had the expected growing pains that any new program would face. Hope was also the dominant force in the MIAA which has led to a couple of pretty lopsided victories for the Flying Dutch. The rivalry will be different this year. Both teams enter the showdown 7-0, tied for first place in the MIAA after the Knights beat Trine 51-20 on Halloween and Hope similarly crushed Kalamazoo. The win over 6-1 Trine proved that Calvin is for real this year, not just beating mediocre teams. Now the Knights will host Hope for the first time in their very own stadium at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7. Calvin passing attack It has been all about passing for the Knights, who put up 400 yards through the air to quiet the Thunder. They rushed for just 89 yards on 32 carries, but were able to pass at will. Thomas Vaccaro was 23-for-34 passing with four touchdowns. Hunter Hogan and Luke Michmerhuizen each had more than 100 yards receiving. That is a lot to defend.
