GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) — A growing West Michigan business is seeing an increase in demand for self-care services.

Waxology is adding a Beauty Bar at its Grandville location, which opened in 2022. The Beauty Bar will offer base facials that will take around 30 minutes, and there will be add-ons like aromatherapy and LED lighting.

“We really want to make sure we’re at a price point where everyone can be able to afford (it) on a monthly basis,” Waxology owner and founder Betsy Fahlen-Alverio explained. “As well as being able to fit it into the nooks and crannies of your life.”

Fahlen-Alverio first opened Waxology in the Grand Rapids area more than a decade ago after she was diagnosed with PCOS.

“I had an excessive amount of hair and I wanted to go to a place that did just waxing because I wanted to feel comfortable,” she explained. “I didn’t want to feel judged, I didn’t want to feel embarrassed. But also I wanted to go to a place where there was people who specialized in hair removal; There wasn’t anything like this.”

She said Waxology was the first waxing-only studio in the area.

Her business, which she ran by herself for seven years before adding employees, has “been growing like crazy,” now up to three locations and 27 employees.

She said she’s recently seen a big uptick in demand for self-care services.

“Everyone is just so busy now, and self-care is one of those things that … you need to focus on yourself,” she said.

Waxology will be celebrating the launch of the Beauty Bar on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and free facials and brow waxes.

Fahlen-Alverio said her team’s clients are excited for the addition.

“I think people are really finding that they want to feel comfortable, they want to feel like they can go to a place where they don’t feel embarrassed, that they have someone like them,” she said. “If you’re plus size, if you’re in transition, if you are Hispanic, if you’re white, if you’re Black, it doesn’t matter, we have someone like that that can relate to you. If you’re a mom … (with a) crazy busy schedule, we understand because we have someone who is going through the exact same thing and we want to welcome you.”
